Watson is a professional Pawtucket Police Department Therapy K9 who has helped bring comfort, connection, and compassionate support to crime victims, children, families, and members of the Pawtucket, Rhode Island community.

Partnered with Detective Trevor Lefebvre, Watson represents a different kind of police K9. Rather than performing patrol, apprehension, or detection work, Watson’s role focuses on therapeutic support and positive human connection.

Watson has assisted during sensitive investigations, supported children and families, visited schools and community organizations, and participated in community events throughout Rhode Island.

Supporting Victims During Difficult Investigations

One of Watson’s most important roles has been supporting people involved in difficult and potentially traumatic investigations.

Pawtucket Police Department records report that Watson and Detective Lefebvre have assisted with interviews involving victims and families affected by violent felony assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, child molestation, and death investigations.

Watson’s presence can provide a comforting point of connection during an experience that may otherwise feel intimidating or overwhelming.

A therapy dog does not conduct an interview or replace the work of detectives, victim advocates, mental-health professionals, or other members of a multidisciplinary team. Instead, the dog can provide supportive companionship within an appropriately managed interaction.

Watson has developed a particularly visible role supporting children.

In December 2021, Associated Press photographer David Goldman captured Watson comforting a seven-year-old child receiving a COVID-19 vaccination at Nathanael Greene Elementary School in Pawtucket.

The photographs received widespread national and international distribution, including appearances in major photo collections and news coverage.

Watson's work that day demonstrated something simple but powerful about animal-assisted support: a friendly dog can provide children with a positive focus during an unfamiliar or stressful experience.

Building Relationships Between Police and the Community

Watson also helps create opportunities for positive interactions between law enforcement and the people officers serve.

School visits, youth programs, community events, and other outreach activities allow children and adults to meet Watson and his handler outside an emergency or investigative situation.
