Therapy Dog Classes

Therapy Dog Classes (for Animal Assisted Therapy)
It’s official. Dogs are good for human health. They reduce our blood pressure, slow our heart rates, relieve depression, and speed up healing.

This is why Animal Assisted Therapy programs can be found in nursing homes, hospitals, prisons, homes for disabled children, residential treatment facilities, even libraries and schools. Is your dog calm, confident, easy-going, and friendly? Does he or she love being petted? Then the two of you can bring joy and healing to your community.

Touching Tails
Get ready for therapy dog work. In this class your dog will learn to relax around people using medical equipment like walkers, canes, and crutches, as well as other social and environmental challenges therapy dogs need to take in stride.

This class prepares you for the elements of both AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test (required by many Animal Assisted Therapy programs) and the Delta Society Pet Partner Team Evaluation. The CGC Test will be offered on week five of the class. The Pet Partner Team Evaluation will be offered on week six.

What You & Your Dog Will Learn
AAT basics. What makes a good animal therapy team, what are the different program options and what’s required for each.
Desensitization
. Getting your dog used to people using medical equipment, meeting and being petted by strangers, etc.
Tests/evaluations
. The Canine Good Citizen Test will be offered on week five of the class. The Pet Partner Team Evaluation will be offered on week six.

What You & Your Dog Will Learn
Before taking the Canine Good Citizen Test, you will be asked to sign the Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge. Responsible dog ownership is a key part of the CGC concept. By signing the pledge, you agree to take care of your dog’s health needs, safety, exercise, training, and general quality of life. You also agree to be a responsible dog-owning member of the community by doing such things as picking up after your dog and never letting your dog infringe on the rights of others.

After signing the pledge, you and your dog are ready to take the CGC Test. Test items include:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming (dog accepts handling and is in good health)
  • Out for a walk (loose-leash walking)
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sit, down, & stay
  • Coming when called
  • Polite behavior around another dog
  • Reaction to distraction (noise, strange objects, joggers)
  • Supervised separation
